In general I find that the cost of housing is quite high and rising by about 15% to 20 %per year. In the 6 years I have lived in Shanghai I have seen the rent double on most places and the cost of living (groceries etc) soar. Its true if you don't eat a western diet, stay home nights and don't travel too much you can live very cheaply, just don't get sick, have children or take taxis.
